Julius Terrell This album would fit perfectly in 2001: A space oddessy. The visions I have change with my mood, but it's just so damn strange. So multilayered. Favorite track: environs (excerpt).

~ DJ Megasoup (Selaroda) ~ Amazing multidimensional soundscapes! Also a really cool conceptual album that plays with the idea of what a record can (and should) be. Highest recommendation...

about

ヽ(o^▽^o)ノ

the castle itself is hidden in a mysterious non-place. in order to get to it, you have to travel through a dense fog, and then through an environment that changes as you walk through it. trees turn into cars that turn into buildings that turn into lakes. the landscape is part desert, part city, part alien world, and all the elements shift constantly before your eyes. this is to protect the castle from being found by those with foul intent. each time you seek the castle, the path is different.

environs describes the area around the castle during several different approaches to it. when i was making the recordings, i had an idea that i thought would fit well. i thought, wouldn't it be neat to have a record that changes every time you play it? like, with my favorite records, i love them so much, and i've listened to them so many times that i know them really well. which i think is part of what feels nice about them. but then after a while, there's really not much new left to explore. so wouldn't it be great if our favorite records changed over time? i mean like in a conscious, composed way. like there could be a song about a relationship that feels happy on the first play through, but then gets sadder with each replay. i feel like this could be a really fun and interesting compositional dimension to play around with.

i decided that the idea would work well with environs, because the approach to the castle is different every time. so i created an application that plays a new iteration of the record each time it's played, and i housed it in a cube made of fluorescent marshmallows. i don't think that the marshmallow cube really showcases all that the format is capable of, but it's a start, and i hope it gets the idea across. if you'd like to order one, please reach out to me at gabe@futureforever.net.

it's my goal to release additional records that change every time you play them, in a variety of styles, and in collaboration with a variety of folks.

i'm currently experimenting with a way to put all the pieces of the castle together into a cohesive whole. you can follow my misadventures and hear the latest version at www.futureforever.net/sun_castle
